6Health Benefits of Peaches

The stone fruit has more health benefits than you might realize.
Peaches, along with nectarines, plums, apricots and cherries, belong to the stone fruit family and are related to almonds. Not only are peaches delicious, especially at their peak, but they also have a number of unique health benefits. Here are six reasons to get your own account of this gorgeous, fluffy fruit.

They're good for gut health
Fiber, the non-digestible part of carbs, prevents constipation, supports intestinal health and helps regulate blood sugar levels by slowing their rise2.

They support your immune system
Peaches support your immune system in three ways. The average peach (about 5 ounces) contains 6 milligrams of vitamin C, which is 7% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for men and 8% for women1.

Peaches also contain vitamin A, which plays an important role in keeping your lungs and other organs healthy.5 A third way peaches support immunity is the natural antibacterial properties of peaches, meaning certain components of peaches fight bacteria and other insects that make us sick.6

They have antioxidant properties
Peaches contain antioxidants, particularly polyphenols and carotenoids. Antioxidants are known to combat oxidative stress, which is an imbalance between the production of cell-destroying free radicals and the body's ability to resist their harmful effects. Oxidative stress is important for brain health because it is a known causative factor in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

You may see healthier skin
Peaches contain beta-carotene and vitamin C. Both have been shown to support skin health. Beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, helps protect skin from sun damage.

One fresh peach contains about 88 grams of water, so peaches can help hydrate the skin (and the body as a whole).

Peaches can support eye health
The lutein and zeaxanthin found in peaches help protect the retina and the lens. These two carotenoids have been shown to reduce the risk of two common eye diseases: macular degeneration and cataracts.9

Vitamin A, found in peaches, also supports healthy vision. In rare cases, true vitamin A deficiency can lead to a condition called "dry eye," which can damage normal vision and cause night blindness (inability to see in the dark or low light).10

Peaches can help with blood pressure.
Peaches are high in potassium, which is important for blood pressure. High sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure, but potassium acts as a natural diuretic and helps regulate blood pressure
